MP raises idea for water transfer from Türkiye's Lake Van to Iran's Lake Urmia

Tehran, IRNA— Transferring water from Lake Van in Türkiye to Lake Urmia in Iran can be a win-win solution for water shortage and energy issues in the two neighboring countries, an Iranian member of parliament has suggested.

Mohammad-Reza Mir-Tajoddini said on Monday that he had raised the idea of water transfer from Van to Urmia during the recent trip to Turkey where he accompanied the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Mir-Tajoddini said he had made the suggestion to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The idea is in line with Iran's efforts to revive Lake Urmia, located in the northwest of Iran, which has been drying up in recent years.

“I told the Tukish president that If we transfer the water of Lake Van to Lake Urmia, it will be a win-win project for two countries,” said the Iranian parliamentarian.

The legislator said the project could entail the construction of a 1000-megawatt hydroelectric power plant, adding that the project had been studied in several universities.

Mir-Tajoddini a number of Turkish investors have voiced the readiness to contribute to the construction of the power plant and to pay for costs of water transfer from Lake Van to Lake Urmia.
